What Do You Think?

I got my free e-book today from headgates.org that I talked about on my last post.  I'm really loving it so far (we got off to a late start this morning so I haven't had time to finish it - it's a short read though).  It fits right in with my new quest for "wholeness" and for creating truth in our environment.  I can see that it might spark some controversy for some people though.  I would love to know what others think!  Please read it and let me know.  I'll share some more of my thought on it after I have some time to finish it and digest it.  Whether you agree with it or not, it is a very worthwhile read!

  1. Hi Karen,

I received mine this morning too and browsed a bit but I haven't started in yet...other than to order the two books she recommended about womanhood and fatherhood. I would love to discuss her article and these two books. You in?

  2. I was up all night with a sick baby so I read the whole thing last night. Are there parts you disagree with or do you just think it's controversial for other people?

I'm just grateful to finally have a way to explain these ideas to people fully. Especially family if I can get them to read it.

It would be so much fun to get together and discuss it! We should do it at a park the next time we get another warm day. Just a thought!

  3. I've read it 1 1/2 times through. So many good ideas. After I finish it again I will talk to my hubby and we will think through how we will implement some of these things. I would also love to see how others digest and apply this.

  4. Julie and Lara - we should most definitely do a discussion about the article - and the books. Let's discuss the book at the park on the next warm day - like you said, Lara. There's some really powerful stuff there!

Deanna - let me know what you guys end up doing! I'm anxious to talk to my husband more in depth about it as well. Meanwhile, I'm going through the house and getting rid even of more things tonight...

  5. Thank you for the reccomendation. I just finished this and although I agree with a lot of it and plan to share it with my local TJ Ed group to discuss. I guess the parts I take issue with are the parts I think will be hardest to impliment into our life. Again thanks, I do want to share it with my husband and begin to "do" rather than just read.

  6. Rebekah - I'm sure it will make for great discussion, I'm curious what parts you disagreed with - I wish I could be there for your discussion!

  7. I don't like her method of implementing her ideas. It is very controlling. I'm glad I didn't grow up in her house. I feel sorry for her kids. Reading is not the end all of life. Her kids read because there is nothing else to do, not because they necessarily choose it. What will they choose when they have lots of options?

  8. jaradoron - I appreciate you sharing your honest opinion. When I went to Keri's class at the TJED forum, I remember her saying (I'm paraphrasing), "I'm not talking about making your house so boring so your kids have nothing better to do so they have to pick up a book, I'm talking about making your home so real that your children will be aware of the beauty and truth around them" That is what I am trying to do.
Reading is definitely not the end all of life, but some children don't like to pick up a book because there are so many easier thrills around them. I think you are creating a real environment when you don't bring stuff into your home that distracts from truth and beauty.
Options are good, but I think she is creating an environment where kids are surrounded by beautiful options (they can play outside, use their imaginations with their toys, and whatever else they choose to do within a real environment void of useless distractions) - I think since her kids have been exposed to the higher things in life when they are so young, the other fluff in life will be unappealing as they grow older. I know this has been true for me as I have been tasting of the higher things in life and I see my children choosing it as well in many instances.
    Just some thoughts.

  9. She may say that she's not making her house boring, but when you actually look at what she's doing-- that is exactly what she's doing. It is also void of any outlet for creativity. Seeing the same picture drawn with different mediums helps a child see the same thing with a different perspective-- very valuable, I think. I don't know of anything more creative than making your own movie. It sounds to me like she's more concerned with giving herself time to do what she wants and living in a clean environment than with what would actually be best for her children. Very sad. Good luck to you.

  10. I see it a little differently (obviously, if you've read my posts!), but I respect your perspective. Good luck to you too!
